Domen is a versatile urban living space that can be used for studying, café visits, and as a hangout spot. “Bylivshus” is a collective term for urban living spaces and neighborhood offices in Aarhus, Denmark that focus on community, and green urban development. Domen is located at Pier 2 in the harbor of Aarhus and is constructed as a large glass dome resembling a greenhouse.
VISION
(THE GOAL)
To develop and redesign a website that communicates the values of Domen and its unique architecture.
(THE CHALLENGE)
Domen began as a project by DomeOfVisions, which sets up similar buildings in various locations in Denmark. In 2018, DomeOfVisions left Aarhus, and Aarhus Municipality took over the responsibility and operation of Domen. As a result, the visual identity of Domen’s website now lies with the municipality. They have a strict design that fails to reflect Domen’s unique expression and values.
VISUAL IDENITITY
(MOODBOARD)
Inspired by the unique design of Domen and its natural color palette, my study group and I created mood boards at the beginning of the design process. Our mood boards allowed us to establish a common starting point for the visual identity of the website.
(LOGO)
When creating our logo, we quickly decided that it should incorporate the building’s distinctive shape. Throughout the process, we worked with arcs and triangles while attempting to include Domen’s name. Our final logo consists of five arcs that form the shape of Domen. The arcs embrace each other, symbolizing Domen’s focus on civic engagement and community. Additionally, we made sure that the logo is simple and can be scaled up or down, as well as inverted between black and white, allowing it to be used for both web and print purposes.
(ILLUSTRATIONS AND ANIMATIONS)
It was important for us to illustrate the core vualues of Domen in a simple and clear manner. To achieve this, we designed three icons, each representing one of Domen’s core values. The icons are rectangular and created in the same aspect ratio, allowing them to be scaled up or down without losing their shape and size relationship.
In the footer, we chose to design an animated banner in the same style as the icons. Its purpose is to make the footer engaging and less text-heavy while reflecting the atmosphere experienced in Domen.
Finally, we created small illustrations for the café’s menu, using the same design style as the icons and animation. We also developed plant illustrations as line drawings, keeping the plants simple and elegant.
(PHOTOGRAPHY)
The aesthetically beautiful exterior of Domen meant that there was little need for post-processing of the images we took. It was important for us that the images were authentic and reflected Domen as it is, which is why editing of the images was kept to a minimum.
